Context
Context

Many everyday products are shaped by assumptions so familiar they go unquestioned. The padlock is one of them.

Functional, familiar, and largely unchanged, yet often difficult for users with limited dexterity, reduced grip strength, temporary injury, or occupied hands.

Flux began as an exploration in universal design: how might a common security object be redefined through the principle of effortless use? The objective was to create a padlock that is intuitive, accessible, and trustworthy for a wider range of users, while maintaining the visual confidence and durability expected from a security product.

Research
Research

The project began by examining how people interact with locks in real contexts rather than ideal conditions.

User interviews and survey data highlighted recurring points of friction: users often lock items while multitasking, many struggle with key insertion and alignment, and a significant number recheck locks due to uncertainty after use.

Existing products were benchmarked to understand how traditional padlocks prioritize mechanical security while overlooking ease of interaction. These findings revealed an opportunity to treat accessibility not as an add-on feature, but as a fundamental measure of product performance.

Analysis
Analysis

The research reframed the challenge from securing objects to creating confidence through use. A lock may be technically effective, but if operation feels awkward or unclear, trust diminishes.

Three core design priorities emerged: low-effort shackle operation, a more accessible key interaction, and clear feedback upon locking.

Universal design became the guiding framework throughout the project. Rather than targeting a niche audience, the aim was to improve the experience for anyone navigating reduced mobility, temporary limitation, one-handed use, or time-pressured everyday scenarios.

Conceptualization
Conceptualization

Rather than overcomplicating the solution, the concept phase focused on how a small shift in interaction could create a meaningful improvement.

Traditional padlocks depend on visually locating a narrow keyhole and aligning a key precisely, an inconvenient task when carrying items, using one hand, or operating in low light.

Flux explored a magnetic disc-based mechanism, allowing the key to guide itself into position through magnetic alignment. This simple change removes unnecessary friction from the experience, replacing trial-and-error with a smoother, more intuitive gesture.

A simple design change also allowed the shackle to slide into the hole smoothly to secure the lock after use.

Development
Development

We did iterative ergonomic form studies with clay and foam to produce a smooth, palm-friendly geometry that supports stable handling and low-effort operation. The key was redesigned as a flatter, more ergonomic component that is easier to grip, orient, and insert.

CAD modeling was used to resolve proportions, internal packaging, tolerances, and the relationship between body, shackle, and mechanism. Tactile and mechanical feedback were integrated to confirm successful locking. CMF exploration further positioned the product as premium, durable, and contemporary rather than overtly assistive.

Outcome
Outcome

The final outcome is Flux - a padlock that demonstrates how a subtle design decision can significantly improve everyday usability.

Flux becomes easier to operate in the dark, with one hand, or in moments of distraction. Reduced grip demands and clearer locking feedback further widen accessibility without compromising security. Rather than reinventing the category through complexity, Flux improves it through simplicity - demonstrating how thoughtful universal design can transform everyday experiences.
